December is when most South Africans can finally travel. Schools close on 9 December 2026, offices empty, and the year-end bonus is in sight. It’s also when the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia are at their most changeable.

Some islands are at their best in December. Others are in the middle of their rainy season. Brochures rarely tell you which is which.

This guide does. It covers six of our favourite island destinations, what December weather usually looks like in each, and the paperwork that has changed recently. Weather is never guaranteed, but knowing the pattern helps you pick the right place.

Best bets for December sunshine

The Maldives

December is generally the start of the Maldives’ drier season, as the north-east monsoon brings calmer seas and clearer skies. That’s why it’s one of the most popular months to visit, and one of the busiest.

Good for: couples, honeymooners, snorkellers and anyone who wants water clear enough to see the reef from the jetty.

Worth knowing: the weeks around Christmas and New Year book up first and cost the most. If you can travel in the first half of December, you’ll usually find more choice.

Thailand’s Andaman coast

Thailand has two coastlines, and in December they behave very differently. On the west (Andaman) side – Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak and the islands around them – December is the start of the dry season. Seas settle, and boat trips to the outer islands run reliably.

Good for: families, groups of friends and anyone who wants beaches, food and day trips in one holiday.

Worth knowing: on the east (Gulf) side, Koh Samui and its neighbours are often still in their wetter months in December. If you’re set on Samui, January onwards is usually a safer choice.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar’s short rains usually fall in November, so December is often drier, hot and bright. It’s a strong choice for a shorter December break.

Good for: couples, adventurous families and anyone mixing beach with history in Stone Town.

Wonderful, with a little rain

Mauritius

December is high summer in Mauritius: hot, humid and green, with occasional short tropical downpours that clear quickly. The sea is warm, and the island is at its most lush.

December is also early in the cyclone season, which officially runs from mid-November to mid-May. The most active period is usually January to March. Good travel insurance is a must.

Good for: families. It’s familiar, easy to reach from South Africa, and many resorts are designed around children.

Worth knowing: Mauritius is the most popular December island for South African families. The good-value rooms in school-holiday weeks go early.

Seychelles

December in the Seychelles is warmer and more humid, as the north-west trade winds set in, and showers become more frequent. Rain often comes in short, heavy bursts between long sunny spells.

Good for: couples who want space, beauty and quiet, and are happy to swap a beach afternoon for a long lunch now and then.

Bali

Bali is in its wet season from roughly November to March. Expect heavy afternoon showers on many days, with mornings that are often clear.

Good for: travellers who want culture, food, rice terraces and spas more than a guaranteed beach tan. The island is greener than ever, and it’s well suited to a mix of Ubud and the coast.

Worth knowing: if a beach-only holiday is the goal, the Maldives or Thailand’s Andaman coast will usually suit you better in December.

Paperwork that has changed

Rules change, so we check every booking before you travel. These are the recent changes South African passport holders should know about:

  • Thailand: since 15 September 2026, South Africans get 30 days visa-free (previously 60). Longer stays need a tourist visa arranged before you fly.
  • Seychelles: you need a Travel Authorisation before you board. Apply only through the official Seychelles Electronic Border System, which charges €10. Lookalike websites charge much more.
  • Zanzibar: compulsory local travel insurance (US$44 per adult) has applied since October 2024. From 1 October 2026, mainland Tanzania requires its own version. If you land in Zanzibar first, you buy Zanzibar’s policy only.
  • Bali: South Africans can get a visa on arrival (or apply online for an e-visa). You also need the free All Indonesia arrival card and the Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per person.

This list isn’t a substitute for checking your own passport and route. Your consultant will confirm what applies to you.

How to make December work

Move now, not in November. December flights and rooms from South Africa sell first. Mid-October is late, but not too late.

Be flexible by a few days. Shifting your departure by two or three days can open up flights and rooms that look sold out.

Decide what “beach holiday” means to you. A kids’ club and a big pool point to a different island from total silence and a book.

Budget for the whole trip. Compare prices with flights, transfers and meals included. An all-inclusive resort can work out cheaper than a lower room rate plus three restaurant meals a day.
